| Network Time Protocol Project | 2007-08-05 19:01:03 |
Description: The Network Time Protocol (NTP) is used to synchronize the time of a computer client or server to another server or reference time source, such as a radio or satellite receiver or modem. It provides accuracies typically within a millisecond on LANs and up to a few tens of milliseconds on WANs relative to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) via a Global Positioning Service (GPS) receiver, for example. Typical NTP configurations utilize multiple redundant servers and diverse network paths in order to achieve high accuracy and reliability.
The Network Time Protocol (NTP) Project conducts Research and Development in NTP and produces the Official Reference Implementation of NTP along with the Implementation Documentation. Background information about NTP, along with briefings and a bibliography, are available at the Network Time Synchronization Project Page.

Type: Consortium Dues: sliding scale from $1K to $60K per year. URL: http://www.fieldbus.org/ index.html ReviewText: We had never heard of Fieldbus, and had to look it up. Here is what Wikipedia has to say: "A Fieldbus is an industrial network system for real-time distributed control. A complex automated industrial system - say a manufacturing assembly line - usually needs an organized hierarchy of controller systems to function. In this hierarchy there is usually a Human Machine Interface (HMI) at the top, where an operator can monitor or operate the system. This is typically linked to a middle layer of programmable logic controllers (PLC) via a non time critical communications system (e.g. Ethernet). At the bottom of the control chain is the fieldbus which links the PLCs to the components which actually do the work such as sensors, actuators, electric motors, console lights, switches and contactors." Once registered on the Fieldbus site, you can download a number of white papers and technical guides, including a set of System Engineering Guidelines. |
